How to get the most out of this course!

Parents will use this course in different ways based on specific needs and personality style.

We have designed this course so that it can be taken in a sequential manner, but also so that parents can jump to different topics that are of interest.

Some parents will also choose to complete all sections of the different reinforcement systems since they may use different types of systems at various times or skills for their children, while other parents might only explore the reinforcement system that fits them best.

We have created a quiz that helps parents to explore which types of programs are most likely to fit their parenting style.

Handouts and samples have also been provided such as examples of reinforcement charts and how to address some common areas of skill building for children.

Homework challenges and reflection questions have also been provided as a way to increase learning and create higher interaction with the course material and concepts.

The more you put these concepts into action the more you will get from the course!

Why we created this course:

There is a direct need for this information!

In our years of providing services to children and parents, one of the top areas that parents often need support to create an effective behavior reinforcement system that suits their parenting style.  It felt important to provide a structured course with many of the key areas that can be challenging in this area.

  • There is power in these type of behavioral interventions to positively impact the lives of children and their families.
  • There are clear ways to improve behavior systems such as increasing consistency and picking a program that fits one’s parenting style.
  • Parenting programs can be complex, intricate systems in which small, but deliberate tweaks in interventions can have dramatic impact on the efficacy of a specific program.

This course is for you if:

This course is for parents of school-aged children who want to improve their child’s behavior and skills through positive, research-based principles that have been shown to improve child behavior and long-term outcomes for children.

In order to be successful and have this course be effective we recommend that you:

  • are willing to spend time implementing the skills and behavioral plans taught
  • be open to making mistakes and for things to not always go smoothly
  • be willing to be reflective on your own behavior as a parent
  • have a value for positive reinforcement interventions

We take time to discuss special areas to consider as well as research and brain science specific to children with attention, learning and social difficulties such as ADHD, high functioning autism, and learning disabilities, but ultimately the behavioral principles demonstrated in this course are often appropriate for children in the neurotypical range.

This course is NOT for you if:

This course is not the right fit currently for a parent who does not believe in providing any kind of reward or reinforcement.  We will cover content such as the difference between rewards/reinforcement versus a bribe, but a parent who is not willing to consider this area further and provide rewards this program is not the right fit for.

Also, parents who have children with severe behavior problems or severe mood instability will likely be better served by more interactive/high levels of support such as working directly with a child psychologist or therapist specializing in high risk behaviors, or working with a behavior analyst through an applied behavioral analysis approach.  Treatment teams may also include pediatricians, psychiatrists, neurologists and school professionals.
